As you know, it was Fathers’ Day two Sundays ago. As a father of 3, it really is a special day for me, and gives me a wonderful opportunity to reflect on how wonderful my family is.
The dodgy CDs and cards that sing to you are a thing of the past now though – my kids are grown up and have kids of their own, so rather than presents and cards, it’s all about messages and telephone calls.
Which is MORE than enough – having a family who you care for and who care for you really is absolutely amazing, and luckily enough for me, I’ve got more than one.
You see, 21 years ago, when I started Verbatim I set out to achieve something different. Before I set out on my own, I’d worked all over the world, mostly in corporate environments where I had no connection to anyone.
The whole thing just felt like a big machine – there was no care, kindness, integrity, fairness or love.
I knew that being in that environment for my entire career would rob me of my soul, and that’s why, in 1997, I decided to go it alone. I wanted to build something different to those corporate entities I’d been a slave to for years. I wanted to build a family.
I’m proud to say that that’s what I’ve achieved – our close-knit team of 20 stays true to those core values – the values that I so appreciate in my relationships with my wife, Juliet and children – Olivia, Barnaby and Tom – and the values that I really feel are a vital part of a sustainable workplace that does genuine good.
On Father’s Day, as I thought about these things, I felt thankful, and I hope that as you read this, maybe you’ll feel thankful too.
Have a great day,
Proud Head of Two Families
